Increase in home robberies and tips on how to protect yourself.
It is good news that the total number of robberies has fallen significantly in recent years.
Robberies against shopkeepers in particular have fallen sharply. This is partly because entrepreneurs and the government have invested heavily in preventive measures, such as better security and improved camera surveillance. These measures have significantly increased the chance of criminals being caught.
At the same time, a shift is taking place. Robbers more often choose a home instead of a store as their target.
In the 1990s, there were hardly any home robberies. Recent research figures now show that 4 in 10 robberies are committed at a home.
Low interest rates on savings accounts and the possibility that customers will have to invest money in the future to deposit their money with a bank could lead to us en masse saving our savings in an old sock.
Researchers expect that criminals therefore change their strategy and it seems likely that criminals try to reduce their chance of being caught by attacking homes, with all the consequences that entails.
How do you reduce the chance of a home robbery?
-Always check who is at the door. Don't just open the front door. If you don't trust him, first ask who he/she is and what he/she is doing. If you still don't trust it, call 112.
-Agree with yourself and your family members that you will no longer open the front door after a certain time in the evening when the doorbell rings.
-Never let strangers in your home, no matter how reliable they may seem.
-If someone says that he/she is coming on behalf of the municipality or an institution, ask for proof of identity or call the company or agency to check.
- Never take your wallet to the door. Have you opened the door and do you want to take something such as your phone or money: Close your front door!
-Strangers come to the door asking to call the emergency number: Do not let them in and call 112 yourself.
-Do not let strangers use your toilet, refer them to a public toilet.
-Home robberies also take place during the day. Therefore, also be alert during the day to people with the wrong intentions.
-Use a door chain or aperture holder or speak to people at the door via an intercom system.
-A video intercom is a useful and safe tool to see who is there. is at your door and can communicate in a secure manner.
-Teach your children not to open the front door without your permission.
