See how criminals really do it!

Company Jablotron, one of the experts in the field of alarm systems, conducted a unique and representative study among prisoners convicted of theft and burglary. It was determined what they consider to be the best security, what attracted them to a home and what mistakes people make most often.

82% of burglars said: “I can open an average security home within five minutes.” And the Czechs make it even easier for them. More than 80% of the participating prisoners entered the facility through an open or poorly locked window.

The survey was conducted at the end of 2012 to find out about the experiences of burglars and trends during the execution of the burglary.

In general, the most common mistake that criminals say people make is inadequate window locking.

Three-quarters of respondents consider this to be the easiest way to gain entry into homes. The second easiest access is apparently through the basement. The front door, on the other hand, is a fairly tough nut to crack for the perpetrators and, according to them, even the roof is not one of the particularly easy access routes. The second easiest access is apparently through the basement.

Where is it easiest for thieves to enter buildings?
1. Windows (84%)
2. Basement (74%)
3. Garage (73 %)

“We continuously do our best to improve our products and services to avoid material damage to our customers. We are an alarm manufacturer and also operate the largest security center in the Czech Republic. That is why we are very interested in the views of those against whom we actually develop our products,” says Dalibor Dědek, owner of Jablotron.

The research shows that with current security systems, a thief is most hindered by an alarm system (70%), security doors (69%) and safety glass (63%). More than half of the perpetrators would be convinced to retreat by the marking "Object is connected to Control Room" and the same number mention that they would refrain from burglary if there were guard dogs present. 80% of respondents pointed out that neighbors in an adjacent house do not pose an obstacle to them and 2/3 continue the theft even despite an alarm going off.

What are thieves not afraid of?
1. Neighbors in nearby houses (80%)
2. External window shutters (75%)
3. Foil on the windows (71%)

What is a suitable time for burglars to break into? A total of 52% of respondents stated that family homes are most accessible at night. 74% of respondents felt that during the day is a more suitable time for burglaries in apartment buildings. An important observation is that more than 40% of thieves prefer to break in when people are sleeping in the property.

And on what basis do the perpetrators choose an object for burglary? According to Jablotron research, these are most often "recommendations" from acquaintances. But of course the perpetrators are also attracted by signs of extended absence; a full mailbox or when a house has no lights on or ventilation for a longer period of time. It is also not wise to exhibit valuable things or brag about them on Facebook, for example. Social networks are now used to prepare for a burglary by about a tenth of thieves.

Way of selection for burglary:
1. Tip from acquaintances
2. Full mailbox
3. Monitoring the habits of residents

For the year 2012, the Czech Police registered more than 50 thousand cases of theft by burglary for a total damage of almost two billion Czech crowns. Even though prisoners surveyed generally agreed that today's sophisticated alarm systems are making burglary into buildings increasingly difficult, the data reported shows that Czechs still act with reserve when it comes to property security.
